Nikki + Rob

Before we meet with couples for our final meeting before the big day, we send them a little questionnaire to fill out so we can find out as much about them and their wedding as we possibly can. Some couples answer only the necessary questions, some write only brief responses, and some give us exactly what we hope for. Nikki and Rob gave us exactly what we hoped for and more! They had so many fantastic and unique things planned that reflected them and their relationship which got us excited to start shaping their story. Buried in the info was one line "Oh, you may want to look out for a tiny Winnie the Poo theme - we're having a poem read and our favours are little jars of honey..." Right away we thought this was the ca-utest 'unofficial theme' and were hoping to be able to incorporate it into the film. Little did we know that this would become the through line of their film. This one poem said more about this couples' relationship than we could ever have hoped to find in any speech.

Nikki and Robs love story is SO cute. So dang cute. Piglet and Pooh cute. We hope you like it.

Loowa + Joey Part 2

OK on to part 2! Loowa + Joey's Same Day Edit! First, we think you should watch the film...

As you know we always harp on about storytelling and the importance of being prepared, and SDE's are perhaps the best example of the impact pre-production can have. There is a lot to juggle on any given wedding shoot... being at the right place when you need to be, traveling between locations, lugging all of your gear around, shooting with purpose, capturing audio from multiple sources, etc. But on a SDE we add the massive undertaking of creating a film the same day of the wedding, and that can feel quite daunting. But if you know the story you want to tell and are prepared, it can be so exilirating and dare I say fun! We wanted to share this post to give you a little insight into what goes into putting together a same day edit.

First off is the plan of attack. We didn't want to just go into this shoot blindly and hoping for the best. We wanted to be as prepared as possible. Fortunately we were able to meet and hang out with Loowa + Joey multiple times before the big day, which really helped us get an idea of what was important to them. During these hangouts they told us about how they were planning on exchanging cards + gifts with eachother. We knew this would be a key part in the telling of their story so we wanted to make sure we captured this moment well. A big part of that was making sure we had great audio so we decided to use small lavelier mics and placed them under their clothes. This added a bit of trickyness as it meant we had more gear to carry with us and had to take the time to mic them up, but we feel it makes a huge difference and really helps keep the audience in the story. Crappy sound is all too common and is often the first thing that takes someone out of the story.

We also learned from Loowa + Joey that the guys would be doing a little pre-wedding workout + swim in the morning. We really wanted to make sure we were there to capture this since it reveals how Joey + Loowa love to have fun. Even on a potentially stressful day, Joey still wanted to just be a kid and play in the pool with his buddies. That says so much about him in such a simple way.

One thing we didn't learn about until a couple days before the wedding was that they would be getting a big ol' school bus to drive them around for the day. Seriously... a legit big yellow school bus? Amazing! We knew we had to incorporate this childlike element into their SDE. What better way to show how these two are basically two kids just having fun?

Knowing all of this ahead of time, along with making notes, shot lists, song selections ahead of time (thank you Marmoset!), edit layouts, and having the proper equipment allowed for us to tell an depth story in an engaging way.

These are merely a few things we wanted to highlight about putting together L+J's SDE. We also had tons of help from the amazing crew of Filosophi who ensured we had everything we needed and that the schedule worked for us. As always it was a blast working along side our friend's the amazing photography duo Shari + Mike! We also want to give a huge thank you to our pal Andrew Noon for helping us on this shoot and for being flat out awesome!

Loowa + Joey, you two are so wonderful and insanely fun to be around. Your wedding day was beautiful and we were so happy to be there with you. Thank you for letting us tell your story!

Loowa + Joey || Part 1

We don't often get the chance to make engagement films, so when we do it's quiiiite exciting. We get to hang with this awesome couple more then we usually would, get to know so much about them and see them interact with each other. We get to hear their story from BOTH points of view. All of this was definitely a big help for us as we created their engagement film but it was a HUGE help for us as we planned for their Same Day Edit. So much of storytelling is the work you put into pre-production and so we wanted to make sure we knew all about these two before the wedding day. But more on the SDE later... The day we spent filming with Loowa + Joey was the best. This couple is radical. Not just rad, but full on radical. They are hilarious. So easy going. So much fun. I spent most of the shoot laughing at them from afar while Shari + Mike fought with them to make a normal face for a photo. But for us this was gold! Its so rare that a couple can actually be themselves-completely themselves-while trying to act natural in front of 2 (or in this case 4) cameras.

Loowa and Joey- you nailed it. Such a fun shoot. Such a fun film. Check back soon for part two with Loowa + Joey's SDE!

Robyn + Joe

I’ve been going to Canmore Alberta since I was a kid. My great grandparents immigrated to Canmore from Italy back in the 1920’s where they raised my Grandpa and his two brothers in this adorable pink and white house. Growing up I can recall being specifically TOLD (on numerous occasions) to ‘look at the mountains!’ on our drives out. I remember always being distinctly irritated at this command as I didn’t much care for scenery and would rather continue to hear about what shenanigans Harry and Ron were getting into back at Hogwarts. I would feign interest and yell out the occasional ‘wow’, ‘that's so amazing’, ‘cool’, simply to appease the parentals. The mountains were cool I guess, but they were just mountains. Whatever. I don’t know what happened to me. Maybe its because I’m older, maybe its because I’m slowly turning into my mom, or maybe its because I’m a cinematographer now who see’s everything in life in ‘shots’ but OH MY GOSH HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE MOUNTAINS?! Wow! They’re so amazing! They’re so cool! Canmore blew my socks off this time. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen and served as the perfect backdrop for Robyn and Joe's wedding.

Robyn and Joe are from Ontario. They love the outdoors, friends + family, cold beer, and having fun. Those 5 things combined EQUAL Canmore! So it's no surprise that they decided on that beautiful city for their wedding.

The first time we spoke with Robyn and Joe was on skype last year where we instantly realized that they were the most laid back people er-ver. They were clearly in love, clearly excited about getting married but mostly excited to spend the rest of their lives together :) They are 2 seriously wonderful people. The best kind of people. We were so excited to get to know them and be a part of their day. You need to see this.
